Not for US: The New Avensis
At the Madrid Motor Show this week, Toyota pulled the wraps off the latest version of its Avensis. In addition to the exterior freshening (dig thoose nifty headlamps), the new Euro-cruiser gets two new diesels. The D-4D 180 generates 175 ponies and drives the top-of-the-line Avensis T180. The D-4D 130 powerplant becomes the new entry-level diesel, which burns cleaner and is more fuel efficient than the oil burner it replaces. Presumably, the two existing VVT-i gasoline engines (1.8 and 2.0) will be carried over.
The new Avensis Tourer (read: station wagon) is particularly attractive and makes one wonder why Toyota doesn't offer something similar in the US. As forbidden-fruit wagons go, the Tourer looks even nicer than my other favorite wagon-we-can't-have, the Nissan Stagea.
