Audi Introduces New Piezo-Enhanced 2.0 TDI
Earlier today, Audi UK released information about a new, more powerful 170 hp 2.0 TDI 4-cylinder that will be available for both the A3 and A4 model ranges. The increased power (the standard 2.0 TDI produces 140 hp by comparison) comes from the application of piezo-crystal injection technology.
Until now, this technology was only available in the the automaker's larger TDI powerplants: the 2.7 V6, 3.0 V6 and 4.2 V8. The key selling point of the new 2.0 TDI is that it delivers the power and torque of a six-cylinder while retaining the miserly fuel economy of a 4-cylinder. That amounts to 47.8 mpg (slightly lower with quattro) and a maximum range of 589 miles in the A4. In the front-wheel-drive A3, that range increases to mind-blowing 750 miles under optimum conditions.
Backing up the stingy fuel economy figures are some respectable performance stats:
A4 2.0 TDI SedanBoth models are available with either Audi's standard six-speed manual or the optional S-tronic twin-clutch automatic. Price ranges are £18,930 to £24,405 for the A3 and £22,965 to £26,265 for the A4.
Front-Wheel-Drive: 0-62 mph in 8.6 seconds, 142 mph top speed, 48.7 mpg*
Quattro: 0-62 mph in 8.5 seconds, 139 mph top speed, 42.2 mpg*
A3 2.0 TDI 3-Door
Front-Wheel-Drive: 0-62 mph in 8.2 seconds, 138 mph top speed, 48.7 mpg*
Quattro: 0-62 mph in 7.8 seconds, 136 mph top speed, 44.1 mpg*
The piezo-enhanced 2.0 TDI 4-cylinder produces 170 hp @ 4,200rpm and 236 lb-ft (320Nm) of torque from 1,750rpm to 2,500rpm.

The current 140 hp 2.0 TDI engine will continue to be offered.
